7 Common Paver Light Installation Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

Paver lighting is one of the best upgrades you can offer a customer. It adds curb appeal, improves safety, and completely changes how a project looks at night.
Like any part of a hardscape project, the final result depends on good planning. After installing pavers for many years, here are some of the most common mistakes I've seen and a few simple ways to avoid them.
1. Choosing the Wrong Size Light
This is probably the biggest mistake.
Every homeowner has a different idea of what looks good. Some want a soft, subtle glow, while others want the lighting to become part of the design. Choosing the right fixture isn't just about brightness, it's also about matching the size of the paver.
For example, if you're installing 9-inch border pavers, you might choose a 0.5x9 for subtle ambiance, a 2x9 or 3x9 for a little more light, a 6x9 for stronger illumination, or even a 9x12 on large driveways where the customer wants the lighting to stand out.
One thing I always recommend is getting the customer's approval before ordering or installing the lights.
Most lighting manufacturers are happy to provide sample fixtures to contractors. Keep a few different sizes in your truck and show them during your first meeting. If possible, connect them to a small 12-volt transformer after dark so the customer can see the actual lighting effect.
Before installation begins, have the customer approve both the fixture size and the spacing. That simple step can prevent misunderstandings and expensive changes later.
2. Installing the Wrong Spacing
Spacing has a huge impact on the finished project.
Install the lights too close together and the project may look overlit. Space them too far apart and they lose their visual effect.
Most projects look good with lights spaced 6 to 8 feet apart, but there isn't a single rule that fits every job.
Before laying the pavers, temporarily connect two to four lights after dark and move them around until both you and the homeowner are happy with the look.
3. Connecting the Lights to the Wrong Voltage
Most paver lights are designed for 12-volt low-voltage systems.
Connecting them to 120 volts will destroy the fixture immediately. Even using the wrong low-voltage transformer can damage the LEDs.
Always verify the voltage before making the final connections.

4. Using a Transformer That's Too Small
Many contractors size the transformer based only on the total wattage.
For example, twenty 3-watt lights equal 60 watts. That doesn't mean you should install a 60-watt transformer.
Transformers perform best when they have extra capacity. I usually recommend stepping up to a 200 or 300-watt transformer whenever possible. The price difference is small, and it leaves room to add landscape lighting, hardscape lights, or tree lights later.
Your customer will appreciate having that flexibility.
5. Running Wire Through Concrete Without Conduit
If the wiring needs to cross concrete, always install conduit.
Conduit protects the cable and makes future repairs much easier. If a wire ever needs to be replaced, you'll be able to pull in a new one without cutting concrete.
6. Compacting Over the Lights
After the lights are installed and the polymeric sand has been swept in, it's time to compact the pavers.
Be careful.
Avoid running a plate compactor directly over or next to the fixtures. Around the lights, use a hand tamper or compact carefully to avoid damaging the glass or housing.

7. Leave Extra Fixtures
Always leave one or two extra lights with the homeowner.
If a fixture gets damaged years later, having matching replacements can save time and keep the project looking consistent. Manufacturers occasionally change designs or discontinue products, so spare fixtures are inexpensive insurance.
Final Thoughts
Most paver lighting problems can be avoided before the first paver is installed.
Choose the right fixture, let the customer approve the size and spacing, use the correct transformer, and think ahead for future expansion.
A little extra planning will reduce callbacks, save time, and leave your customer with a project they'll enjoy for years.
